Are 55+ Communities Worth It?

As you approach retirement, you may be wondering if a 55+ community is right for you. There are many factors to consider, such as your lifestyle, your budget, and your social needs.

Pros of 55+ Communities

  • Safety and security: 55+ communities are often located in safe and secure neighborhoods. They may have gated entrances and some may have security cameras.

  • Peace and quiet: If you're looking for a quiet and peaceful place to retire, a 55+ community may be a good option. These communities tend to be less noisy than other neighborhoods, and they often have restrictions on noise levels.

  • Amenities: Many 55+ communities offer a variety of amenities, such as pools, golf courses, fitness centers, and clubhouses. These amenities can provide you with opportunities to stay active and engaged in your retirement.

  • Socialization: 55+ communities offer a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends. There are often social events and activities planned, which can help you stay connected with others.

Cons of 55+ Communities

  • Cost: 55+ communities can be more expensive than other types of housing depending on the location, amenities, HOA fee and if Real Estate taxes (leased vs owned land) are not included. You may have to pay a higher monthly fee, and you may also have to pay for amenities that you don't use.

  • Lack of diversity: 55+ communities can be less diverse than other neighborhoods. This can be a drawback if you enjoy interacting with people of all ages.

  • Isolation: If you're not careful, you could end up feeling isolated in a 55+ community. It's important to make an effort to get out and explore your surroundings, or you may start to feel cooped up.

The Decision

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to move into a 55+ community is a personal one. There are many factors to consider, and the best choice for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. I have had clients that have told me they wished they had moved to a 55+Community sooner as they thought they were too young and didn’t want to live with “old people”. I’ve had others that have told me they knew no one in the 55+Community but they chose that so you can be as social or unsocial as you want.

If you're still not sure whether or not a 55+ community is right for you, there are a few things you can do to make a decision. First, talk to people who live in 55+ communities and get their feedback. You can also visit different communities and see what they have to offer. Finally, take some time to think about your own needs and preferences. What's important to you in a retirement community? Once you've considered all of these factors, you'll be in a better position to make a decision.
